Manipuri tradition is extremely rich with varied forms. The classical forms are the post—Vaishnavite forms of Ras Leela and Sankirtana having their roots in the pre Vaishnavite forms of Thang Ta (the ancient martial arts form) and Lai- Haraoba. Even today, dance is a living tradition in Manipur as it is a medium of worship in the temples.
In the ancient pre- Vaishnavite rituals, the worship of the elements like the Sun, the Earth, Water, Fire, etc. were very popular and the concept of SURYA GATI was inspired from the ritualistic worship of the Sun in Manipuri and Vedic traditions.
